Q-Games and Spike Chunsoft have officially announced PixelJunk Monsters 2, which is coming to PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on May 25.

Today, on the final day of GDC, Q-Games and Spike Chunshoft announced PixelJunk Monster 2 for PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. This newest tower defense entry in the long-running PixelJunk series is poised to release digitally on May 25, and will only cost $14.99.

This game is a sequel to one of the earlier PixelJunk games that released on PS3 in Japan all the way back in December of 2007. This sequel improves monumentally on the original tower defense experience by implementing beautiful looking 3D graphics and multiplayer, both local and online, for up to four people.

In PixelJunk Monsters 2, players control Tikiman, who is attempting to defend his Hut for hordes of monsters. In order to do so, players will have to build a variety of different wacky towers in order to protect what is theirs. Tikiman is very customizable, and players can toggle between a top-down or close-up POV whenever the wish in-game.

The sequel will be arriving digitally on May 25 for just $14.99, although at the time of writing there's no word on whether the game will get a physical release. It's been a long time coming though; the original PixelJunk Monsters was released over ten years ago on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PC.

Much like its predecessor, PixelJunk Monsters 2 is a tower defence game, though it certainly stands out in the visual department thanks to some vibrant, pseudo-stop-motion effects that give the action a unique look and feel. Furthermore, Kotaku reports that the game will clock in at 60fps on the PS4 and 30fps on the Switch in both handheld and docked mode.

Finally, PixelJunk Monsters 2 will support local two-player cooperative play in addition to an online-only four-player mode. Check out a trailer below.
