Before every individual fight with a monster that uses the class system, you may pick your class. When you fight as a certain class, you will gain experience in that class (which is different from the experience that you need to gain levels). As your class level raises, you will get bonuses from playing that class. The first status of a monster usually dictates which status will appear more common: ie deflection for Mages, then Mages will be needed more often for that battle.
